EDIBLE FABRIC BLOG:

How to Get Cake Inspiration from Fashion for Edible Fabrics

Written by Ekat | Date: March 23, 2025

Have you ever looked at a designer gown, a delicate lace veil, or a sleek leather clutch and thought, Wow, imagine that on a cake!? Because I sure have—more times than I can count!

Edible fabrics are honestly one of the newest and coolest things in cake decorating now!

You can make cakes look like they’re wrapped in soft silk, delicate lace, or even shiny leather—all completely edible.

And the best part? Once you get the hang of it, you’ll never see cake decorating the same way again!

I’ve always been obsessed with fashion, but I never thought it would help me with cake decorating—until I discovered edible fabrics!

Suddenly, I started seeing inspiration everywhere: the pleats of a gown, the delicate embroidery on lace, even the glossy finish of a designer bag.

If you’ve ever wanted to make your cakes look like they belong on a runway, let me show you how fashion can completely transform your cake designs!

Note: Stick around—there’s a special downloadable guide waiting for you to turn fashion into edible art!

1. Fashion Trends = Cake Design Goldmine

Fashion designers and cake artists are a lot alike—they both use creativity to shape something beautiful!

The only difference is that designers work with fabric, while cake artists use fondant, and edible fabrics to bring their ideas to life.

Every season, they bring in new textures, layers, and colour combinations that we, as cake decorators, can totally use.

Next time you’re scrolling through Instagram or watching a fashion show, take a closer look:

That flowing chiffon gown? Imagine that as delicate edible silk draping over a cake.

A structured blazer with sharp folds? That could be turned into a stunning modern cake design.

Embroidered lace details? Perfect for an elegant wedding cake with edible lace!

Once you start seeing fashion as cake inspiration, your creativity will explode!

2. Texture Is Everything!

Fashion isn’t just about looking good—it’s about how it feels. And guess what? Cakes can have texture too!

Some of my favourite edible fabric textures inspired by fashion are:

Lace & Veil – Light, soft, and adds a fancy touch.

Lycra/Spandex & Translucent Organza – Smooth, flowing, and stylish with a modern feel.

Leather & Velvet – Strong, trendy, and really eye-catching.

Try this: Next time you touch a fabric, close your eyes and think about how you could recreate that texture in cakes. Sounds fun, right?

3. Colours: Straight from the Runway to Your Cake!

One of my biggest cake design hacks? Looking at fashion colour trends!

Designers set the tone (literally!) for what’s trending, and we can apply the same palettes to cakes.

Soft pastels – Dreamy for weddings and baby showers.

Jewel tones – Bold, dramatic, and seriously luxe.

Black & White – Classic, timeless, and always chic.

So, next time you’re stuck on what colours to use for a cake, check out fashion magazines or Pinterest boards—you’ll never run out of ideas!

4. Accessories = Next-Level Cake Details

Fashion isn’t just about clothing—accessories play a huge role too! And trust me, you can bring all those fabulous details into your cake designs.

Handbags & Shoes – Imagine a quilted edible purse cake!

Jewellery & Beads – Sugar pearls and gold details? YES, PLEASE!

Glitter and Petals – Add some sparkle with edible glitter and soft petals.

Even small details like buttons, stitching, or shiny finishes can turn a cake from just nice to truly impressive!

5. Follow Famous Fashion Designers & Brands for Inspiration

If you want to bring high fashion into your cakes, you need to know what’s happening in the fashion world.

Some designers are known for their unique styles that work perfectly for cake decorating.

Iris Van Herpen: Her futuristic, sculpted designs are full of movement and intricate layers—ideal for wafer paper and gelatin fabric techniques.

Schiaparelli: Bold, artistic, and surreal, their designs often feature gold accents, statement details, and unexpected textures, which can be mimicked with edible fabrics and fondant.

Chanel & Dior Classic elegance, lace, pearls, and timeless silhouettes—perfect for wedding cakes and delicate sugar details.

And so many fashion designers and brands.

Fashion week, red carpet events, and couture collections are great places to spot new trends that could translate beautifully into cake designs.

Follow these brands on Instagram, browse fashion magazines, or save runway photos on Pinterest to build your inspiration!
